Manny Being...an Idiot, but that's Boston

I always say I am going to let things go, but with the constant replays on ESPN and many other postings on the web, I have to get my two cents in on Mr. Manny Ramirez.

Having been a Tribe fan my entire life and during Manny's time spent in Cleveland, I can't say I remember a time, walk off or insignificant home run, where Manny, while with Clevleland, pulled a show boat move like last night. This seems to be his thing now with the Red Sox.

Is it really Manny being Manny or simply Manning fitting in just right in the most arrogant city in America - Boston. It's a simple fact, everyone from the Boston metro area is extremely arrogant about their sports teams. They are the best and there is no discussion. Well, that's until they start losing, then they go radio silent on you. Or better yet, they start to turn on their own, which is why I stay so close to my many Bostonian friends. It's when the tide turns that I get my enjoyment.

Boston fan will scream to the high heavens about great acquisitions like J.D. Drew or Dice K and say they have the best defensive CF in the game. You can't even argue with them, they are right. With players like this, we will dominate anyone and everyone, they say. They love these players, they welcome these players to their city, they buy their jerseys, wearing their name on their own back. Oh, how the tide has turned. Oh, how it has turned.

The tide will soon turn on the Patriots as well and then onto the Celtics. All the sudden everyone is a Celtic fan again. Go figure. Where were these fans last year or the year before or the year before that. I'm all for fair weather fans and supporting a winner, but what I hate is the mouths. Boston has the mouths and I'm praying Cleveland can shut them up for good, tomorrow night.

Well, it will never be for good. As a close friend said last night after the Tribe game, "You may have us now, but it's just on to Patriots season for us here. That's the great thing about being from Boston." They support their winners, I'll give them that, but just show a little class in doing so and maybe it won't spill onto the field in the form of Manny Ramirez after an insignificant home run.

A Sox fan emailed Bill Simmons last night during the game and Simmons put it in his post today. Pretty much sums up Manny Ramirez:
Mark from Philly offers an inspiring defense for Manny's home run preening: "When Manny went deep, my first thought was, 'Quit posing, Manny, we're still down 7-3.' Then it dawned on me that Manny probably had no idea what the score was. In fact, he probably isn't aware that baseball games are determined by which team scores more runs. Manny's only point of differentiation comes when, after hitting a home run, he sees his teammates waiting for him at home plate -- it's at that point he knows it's time to go to the strip club."

Swopeblog,

What are you talking about man? Boston isn't silent its just frustration. Its what makes us a championship city. We expect a Championship every year, and if we don't get it, we mourn for a little while. It makes the victories sweeter, and it sure beats the fan apathy here in Arizona. I'd rather have a pulse that fluctuates, then none at all.

Swopes, thanks the comment on my blog. I posted something on this topic, but it shows to me that Manny is a complete clown. Why he would do that when his team was down by 5, I have no clue.

I'm sure the Tribe pitchers would love to bean him, but Ramirez's display shows how silly and perhaps a savant he is.

JP is right to en extent - Boston spend 150+ million on their payroll and their stated goal is to get to the World Series. I can understand why Boston fans would be upset; however, this year has shown it does not matter how much you spend, you need a lot of breaks to go your way.

Swope, Swope, Swope...

Has the desert heat gotten to you? Boston is the best sports town in the United States. Sure, the Celtics have not been at the forefront of fans minds in a decade or more (think Len Bias and Reggie Lewis), and the Bruins, well, are the Bruins (Where have you gone, Bobby Orr?). But how can you criticize Red Sox Nation as fair-weathered? JD Drew? Not a great acquisition. Yet. Eric Gagne? Ditto. If ever. But one thing throughout baseball is a constant... There are more Red Sox fans across this country than anywhere else. And for good reason. They build you up. They bring you to the edge. They break your heart. Being a Red Sox fan is a metaphor for life. Put that in your peace pipe and smoke it, Tribe fan...

Even if they lose tonight to the Tribe, they are still the heart and soul of baseball, and one ranting Indians fan in the desert will not pump up the TV ratings for the World Series. Even a great story like the Rockies won't save the ship if the Sox aren't at the dance.

We'll talk Pats / Colts in a few weeks, buddy. Tom F'ing Brady will show Manning and Company what they lacked in the AFC Championship last year.

Booyah!

I love it, but as expected, I get no love from my Indians fans and only comments from Bostonians. I don't argue; Boston has true fan passion and they know their sports. But the arrogance of the city and sports figures in the city drives me nuts. But, again, I'm starving out here in the desert as an Indians, Cavs and sometimes Browns fan. As a very young child I jumped ship on the Browns and joined the Steelers Nation. That's been my one saving grace against Boston fans over the years.

My grandfather lived 75+ years and never saw the Sox win a title. My Dad was 65 when they won it. I watched from the grandstand when Yaz hit his 400th homerun and grabbed his 3,000th knock. Watched and waited for this for 34 years.

No one from Boston would ever be a part-time Sox fan. You should be ashamed of yourself.

For that, and the sweater-wearing dog you have.

Man-Up!

War Manny Being Manny.

Out.

And another thing, Mr. Heat Stroke...

From the Plain Dealer:

Country music artist Danielle Peck will sing the national anthem and "God Bless America" at tonight's Indians game.

She will not sing, "Stand by Your Man."

Peck, it turns out, dated Red Sox pitching ace Josh Beckett, who is starting tonight's do-or-die game against the Tribe and who handed them their only loss in the American League Championship Series.

Give me a break. You can't ice the Ice Man. I'll see you at Fenway on Saturday...

From the no longer anonymous.

You're still just Swopie being Swopie.
